More than a decade after a previous plan to build a shopping center on part of the former Frankford Arsenal was aborted, developer Mark Hankin plans to start demolishing buildings this month in another attempt to bring retail to the storied site in Philadelphia's Bridesburg neighborhood.

Kind of depressing to think that with commercial real estate completely in the toilet and a grand total of three stores (2 of which are fast food joints) in the Aramingo Crossings shopping center, they're willing to tear down buildings and try to set up shops in what is a less than ideal location for a shopping center. If people don't want to lease space on Aramingo Ave, right off of 95 what in h*ll makes these people think they're going to want to lease space off of Tacony in a place called "The Arsenal"? At least they're going to clean the place up by getting rid of a lot of contaminants. Kind of like the work Sunoco has done around here.

The Civic stopped it before and they should stop it now.

It's a little too late for Civic to stop anything now. As reported in this thread, http://www.pridesbur...dpost__p__48127, demolition has begun.

And the local city politicians made sure they were there for the photo sessions of backslapping congrats.

What do you mean by that?

I never understood how retail stores pop up out of nowhere. I cant imagine that people need more places to shop.
